Subspace is an altered, trance-like state some people enter during intense BDSM experiences, marked by floating detachment, reduced verbal ability and altered pain perception. It is not universal, it is not a goal, and it requires planning because it changes how a person can communicate.

Descriptions vary, which is part of the point. Common threads are a floating or dreamlike quality, time distorting, language becoming effortful, and sensation registering differently than it usually does.
Plenty of people never experience it, and that is not a shortfall. An experience is not better for having produced an altered state.
If words become hard to find, a system that depends only on words is no longer reliable. This is precisely why nonverbal signals exist and why they are agreed before anything begins.
It is also why negotiation asks, directly, how you communicate if you slip into subspace — and whether you have any history of freezing or going quiet.
Returning takes longer than people expect. Warmth, hydration, low stimulation and unhurried presence do most of the work, and driving or making decisions immediately afterwards is a poor idea.
Drop in the following days is more likely after a deep state, which makes planned aftercare and a follow-up more valuable, not less.
Nonverbal signals exist for exactly these moments.
